50 Things to Do Outside. Mountain Biking

Ah, mountain biking! There’s something primal about leaving behind the concrete jungle of London and hitting the trails, isn’t there? It’s like the adult version of recess—except instead of a playground, you’ve got rugged trails, steep climbs, and the occasional face full of mud. I’m a bloke in my 30s, living in the heart of the city, where my day-to-day usually involves dodging double-decker buses and speed-walking through crowds in Covent Garden. But come the weekend, you’ll find me on two wheels, hurtling down a trail, grinning like a kid who just found a tenner.

The Thrill of the Ride

You know, there’s nothing quite like the buzz you get from mountain biking. The adrenaline kicks in the moment your tyres hit the dirt. Every twist and turn demands your full attention, and there’s a kind of meditation in that. No time to stress about work or worry about the rent when you’re navigating a tricky descent. It’s just you, the bike, and the trail.

One of my favourite spots? Swinley Forest, just a short drive out of London. The trails are a mix of fast-flowing singletrack and technical sections that’ll test your skills. Plus, the scenery is stunning—trees as far as the eye can see, and if you’re lucky, a deer or two. It’s a proper breath of fresh air, quite literally.

The Gear Game

Let’s talk gear because, let’s face it, half the fun of mountain biking is the kit. I recently upgraded to a full-suspension bike, and mate, it’s a game-changer. The difference it makes on rough terrain is night and day. My current steed is a Trek Fuel EX, and it’s got just the right balance of capability and agility for someone like me who’s more weekend warrior than hardcore shredder.

Also, don’t skimp on the helmet. Trust me, a good lid is worth its weight in gold. Mine’s saved my noggin more times than I’d like to admit. And gloves—never forget the gloves. They’re the unsung heroes, protecting your hands from blisters and providing that extra grip when things get sketchy.

A Community on Wheels

What I love about mountain biking is the community. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro, there’s always someone willing to share a tip, lend a hand, or just chat over a pint post-ride. The London biking scene is diverse, too. From the guys tearing up Epping Forest to the weekend warriors at Box Hill, there’s a place for everyone.

So, if you’re a Londoner looking to escape the city grind, get yourself a bike, find a trail, and just ride. It’s the perfect antidote to city life. And who knows? You might just find yourself hooked, just like I did.

Cheers to the trails, the mud, and the unbeatable rush of mountain biking!
