Looking after yourself, it comes in many forms. From eating healthy, regular exercise & getting a good self care routine, its all just as important as the next.
First, how can foods improve your daily life?
The relationship between our diet and our mental health is complex. However, research shows a link between what we eat and how we feel.
Our diet can affect our brain. Some foods can help us feel better.
A Mediterranean-style diet (one with lots of vegetables, seafood, fresh herbs, garlic, olive oil, cereal and grains) supplemented with fish oil can reduce the symptoms of depression. Research has also shown that our gut can reflect how we're feeling: if we're stressed, it can speed up or slow down. Healthy food for our gut includes fruit, vegetables, beans and probiotics.
On the other hand, there are two groups of foods that have a negative effect on the brain:
- foods that trick the brain into releasing chemicals we may be lacking, temporarily altering our mood (for example, caffeine and chocolate)
- foods that prevent the conversion of other foods into nutrients the brain needs (for example, saturated fat such as butter, lard and palm oil).
Caffeine can also cause sleep problems, which can worsen your mood. Some people find it makes them irritable and anxious too.
A healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy can help to reduce your risk of heart disease by maintaining blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
A diet rich in calcium keeps your teeth and bones strong and can help to slow bone loss (osteoporosis) associated with getting older.
So, as you can see, there is a lot of benefits that come from healthy eating, not just your body, but your mind as well.
Getting a good self care routine.
The benefits of establishing a good personal care routine go well beyond just improving physical appearance. The act of taking care of your skin is comforting and soothing.
It begins with the small things, be it the beard oil you use first thing in the morning, or the soothing beard butter you apply last thing before bed to wind down.
Many tend to use a refreshing tea tree shampoo and conditioner to get them going in the morning. To me there's nothing better than getting in that warm shower in the morning, applying my tea tree products, taking a big deep breath that clears your mind, and saying to myself 'lets do this!'
Following a shower I tend to use a nice skin moisturiser that helps to soothe and quench skin that’s in need of a little TLC, leaving it feeling softer and looking healthier.
Be it skin, shave, shower or beard routine, here at onesociety we have it all, we are never to far away to help with any questions you may have to get started in your self-care routine.
We believe that the products you use every day should do more than just wash or moisturise your skin & hair, it’s about looking and feeling your best both inside and out.
